The preputial gland is a prominent accessory sex gland in the mouse. Preputial glands (clitoral glands in female mice) are paired modified sebaceous glands located subcutaneously near the end of the penis. The acini of the preputial glands consist of basal cells with a basophilic cytoplasm and secretory cells containing an oily secretion. Each preputial gland has a long excretory duct with a wide lumen lined by stratified squamous epithelium. The ducts empty into the preputial cavity.
The 4X and 10X micrographs display the lobular structure of the preputial gland. The 20X and 40X micrographs show details of the basal and secretory cells, which form the acini of the preputial gland.
