In the mouse, the bone marrow present in nearly all bony cavities participates in hematopoiesis. Bone marrow is composed of a framework of reticular stroma filled with hematopoietic cells.
The micrographs depict bone marrow in a cervical vertebra. The 4X micrograph shows the vertebra and attached skeletal muscle. The periosteum covering the vertebra is visible in detail in the 10X micrograph. The 20X and the 40X micrograph display the hematopoietic cells (erythroid and myeloid precursors) and adipocytes present in the bone marrow.
