The pineal gland is located at the dorsal surface of the brain, between the cerebral hemispheres and the cerebellum (see Diagram of Endocrine Organs in Head – In Situ). The pineal gland is covered by a thin connective tissue capsule and contains two types of cells; the pinealocytes are large oval cells with pale basophilic cytoplasm; the interstitial (glial) cells are stellate cells with dark basophilic cytoplasm.
The 4X and 10X micrographs depict the pineal gland located between the cerebellum and the brain. The 20X micrograph shows the capsule that surrounds the pineal gland. The 40X micrograph displays the pinealocytes and interstitial cells present in the pineal gland.
